Valentine’s Day is not the only day in the year that we should focus on love. Every day should be Valentine’s Day! It is easy to let the daily routines and requirements get in the way of paying attention to our relationships. Focusing on the people important to us, those we love and care for deeply will make the daily routines and chores worth it! This does not mean spending hours and hours on special projects or huge expenditures on dates and gifts.
Each day this month do one small thing that is meaningful to your partner. This can be something as simple as a cup of coffee in bed, preparing their favorite meal, a glass of wine together at the end of a challenging day, taking a walk on a warm winter day and talking about your relationship or a love note on their steering wheel when they get in the car in the morning. A simple gift of a favorite candy bar, small bouquet of grocery store flowers, or just something that made you think of them during the day can show your loved one that they are never far from your mind. Each of us have different ways that we feel the love of those around us.
Gary Chapman in his book, “The Five Languages of Love” details how people receive and give love. This is a book we highly recommend couples read together and discuss. It can be very eye opening to find that the way you think your partner knows you love them is not the way they truly feel love. For some of us, our language of love is time together, others prefer small acts of kindness, for some it is the receiving of gifts, physical touch is the main way others receive and feel love while others need words of affirmation. It is interesting when you read and explore this book with your loved one to find that the way you like to give and express love may not be the way they receive and feel love. We highly recommend this book to all couples, no matter how long you have been together. Put the information to use, watch the relationship grow and deepen as the trust and intimacy improves.
